Small Groups


Enrich your faith journey through the support and encouragement of others. Contact group leaders for more information. All of these groups are open to new members, so don’t hesitate to pop-in or contact the leader for more details.

New Small Groups This Fall:

Heartfulness Meditation, Tuesdays, 7:30-8:30 pm in the Chapel. Join us for an hour of relaxation and meditation. This class is led by meditation instructor, Shanthi Raman, and is free and open to all. Participants under 15 are asked to come to the first half of the class that explores relaxation exercises. Child care will be provided upon advance request.

Faith into the World, 2nd Sundays, 10:30-11:30am in the Fireside Room, contact Trudy Burling, [email protected], or Nancy Offer [email protected]. Join us to consider issues that impact our world (for example, human trafficking, the death penalty, food insecurity). Trudy Burling and Nancy Offer will coordinate the discussions to: 1) consider what we know about the topic; 2) how the tenets of our faith and Scripture address the issue; and 3) ways in which we can act to bring about a better world for everyone. Our first gathering on October 9 will consider how our faith informs the choices we make.


Men’s Spirituality Group, Mondays, 7:30PM, LGUMC’s Library (rm 12), contact Rob Agrimonti, 408-239-9752, [email protected]This men’s group helps each other grow spiritually by learning and using eight daily spiritual practices. These practices are based on the collective wisdom found in Christian, Jewish, Islamic, Hindu and Buddhist traditions.

Circle of Support, 2nd Tuesdays, 10:00-11:45AM, LGUMC library, contact Christina Capps, [email protected], 408.531.9193. The group provides non-judgmental, confidential support and care to those experiencing a variety of life challenges and transitions; for example; illness, death of a loved one, change in employment, residence, financial or family status or concern for a loved one.

Pathways Los Gatos Bereavement Group, 2nd and 4th Thursdays, contact Martha Weiner, 408-772-5544. We offer grief support for those who have lost a loved one.

Faith, Reason & Community, Thursdays, 1:00 pm in the LGUMC Library (rm 12) from the first Thursday in October until the last Thursday in May, contact Carole Mateer, [email protected], 408-353-2357. On October 6, we will begin our season with a 4 part DVD series entitled The Astonishing Jesus Through the Lens of Luke. It features Kenneth E. Baily, a renowned New Testament and Meddle Eastern scholar. The series includes the following topics: High Drama in the House of Simon the Pharisee (Luke 4:36-50); One Violent Day in the Synagogue (Luke 4:16-30); The Good Shepherd and the Good Woman (Luke 15:1-10); Two Sons Have I Not-How Jesus Retold Israel’s Story (Luke 15:11-32). We welcome all who would enjoy a lively discussion of these topics, as well as many other faith topics during the year.

Kindred Spirits, This book group meets year round on the 2nd Wednesday of the month, 7:30PM, Art Gallery at LGUMC, contact Sharon Armstrong, 408-268-0493, [email protected]The book is read ahead of time and one of the members facilitates the discussion. The book might be fiction, non-fiction, a best seller or a classic. The book titles are listed in the Spire each month or request a Kindred Spirits bookmark which lists the book titles for the entire year. Anyone who loves to read and enjoys a lively, informative and often funny discussion is invited to join us!

United Methodist Women (UMW), A long- standing global ministry of the church dedicated to embrace fellowship, provide educational experiences and expand concepts of mission. UMW sponsors the two circle groups below:

Women at the Table Circle: 3rd Thursdays, Sept.-June, 11:30 am, home of Joy Palmer, 408-997-7246, [email protected]Bring a sack lunch and get updated on mission and service projects and enjoy a program topic led by various members

The Evening Circle: 2nd Thursday evenings at 7:00  pm in a different members’ homes, contact Marge Ulrich, [email protected] 408-253-0522. We enjoy wonderful fellowship, dessert and participate in a program topic led by various members.

A Quiet Time for Women, Fridays, 10:00 am, Chapel, contact Kay Thoresen, 408.356.5802, [email protected]A time to walk the Chapel labyrinth and learn spiritual practices in a safe, supportive environment.

Movie Group, 2nd Saturdays, 3PM, Fireside Room, contact Mike Crow, [email protected] or Ruth Oveland [email protected]This group meets monthly for spirited discussions and reviews of a variety of movies that individuals watch on their own in advance of the session. See the Spire for monthly announcements of what movies will be discussed in the coming month.

Prime Time, 2nd Thursdays, except July, contact Ursula Young, [email protected] or Adrienne Zimmerman, [email protected]The mission of the Prime Time group is to provide church members an opportunity to meet and socialize while visiting destinations within the San Francisco Bay area. Destinations may include local museums, botanical gardens, historical sites, parks, missions, art fairs, churches, and commercial sites of interest.

Where Moms Connect, 2nd of the month, 10:00-11:30 am, LGUMC Chapel, contact Pastor Jennifer, [email protected]  Come for encouragement, faith-sharing, fun and support for the challenges of parenthood. No matter where you are on your journey of faith, no matter how old your children are, or what your parenting methods might be, you’ll find a friendly, warm and supportive group that lifts you up and inspires you for daily life. Childcare and refreshments will be provided and “non-church members” are most definitely welcome!

Gift Stitchery, 1st and 3rd Tuesdays, 12:30- 2:00 pm, Art Gallery, contact Christina Capps, [email protected]. A fellowship/mission oriented group that knits, crochets, or quilts shawls and other accessories to be given to homebound or ill persons or those experiencing major life changes. We welcome people of all levels of experience. Mentors are there to help you.

Saturday Morning Men’s Group: meets bi-weekly, 8:00 am, Fireside room, contact Charlie Kuehmann, [email protected]. Beginning Saturday, October 8. The group includes those from all age ranges and walks of life. Our meetings, focused on deepening our spiritual life through conversations on a variety of subjects, are based on contemporary reading materials. The group is open to all, and you are welcome to join us at any time!

Dinner with Friends, meets September through December, contact Sally Raab, [email protected]. This social program, designed to connect church members together with casual dinners and rotating hosting responsibilities. Couples and singles welcome!

Walking Bible Study, 2nd and 4th Tuesdays from 6:00-7:30 pm, Grace Chapel, contact Marna Taylor, [email protected], 408-439-4614, We will spend time focusing on our reading, then go outdoors for a walk and end in a quiet meditative time walking the Chapel’s labyrinth. Everyone is welcome.
